Do's And Don'ts Of Turning A Profit With Vacation Rentals

Abigail Berry

If you already own a vacation home and plan to use it to make a profit while it is not in use, there are a few things that can help, as well as a few things that will lower your chance of being successful. Take a look at some of the do's and don'ts of turning a profit with a vacation rental.

Do: Invest in good furniture for your vacation rental.

Too many people who choose to rent out vacation homes don't go the extra mile and pick up nice furniture. However, if the vacation home is outfitted with older, mismatched, or scuffed furniture, your guests may be a bit turned off by the place and choose not to return or, even worse, leave a bad review. You don't have to go all out, but it is best to invest in decent furniture, whether it is for the living room, bedrooms, or the outdoor living space.

Don't: Spend a fortune on linens and bedding.

Of course, you want the bedroom to look comfortable and inviting, but spending a lot of money on linens and bedding is not really all that financially feasible. These are items that you will have to replace frequently, so just the basics are good enough. Stick with white linens so they can be properly bleached and sanitized, and steer clear of heavy comforters and throw pillows that are too cumbersome to have to wash after every stay.

Do: Look into services that can help you make the most of your business endeavor.

You may be tempted to keep costs as low as possible by not bringing in outside help with your vacation home rental. However, having some help can actually help your profit-turning efforts along. For example, if you plan to keep the rental clean on your own, you may struggle with time to do everything. However, if you hire a professional cleaning service, your rental will always be clean and ready to go, which will only attract guests back to the property.

Don't: Skimp on the decor that makes a home look inviting.

Don't leave the interior of your vacation home look boring. People looking for a place to stay like this will expect something homey and inviting, which means it will be most attractive if it looks like a finished home. Leaving all the decor off the walls and not taking the time to add knickknacks and other purely aesthetic items will leave the place feeling a little cold. It is well worth what you spend to invest in at least a few items to create a home-like atmosphere.

About Me
Any Business Can Benefit From A Web Prescence

I'm Tom Doberstein. I have to make a confession: I am absolutely addicted to social media. And that has been an excellent thing for me because this addiction has helped me become an expert in social media marketing. I never meant to become an expert in this subject, but I just couldn't help but strike up conversations with some of my favorite brands. Some of the conversations I have had with my favorite brands through social media have been very entertaining and have made me develop an interest in the ways that businesses can use social media and other Internet tools to promote their businesses.
