Pallet Boxes: An Introduction For Business Owners

In a lot of industrial, manufacturing, and even retail settings, good cardboard boxes can make a huge difference in everyday operations. Even though most boxes are relatively small in stature, the pallet box is a much larger, much more versatile container that is well worth getting to know as a business owner. 

What exactly is a pallet box?

A pallet box is generally a box that has a footprint the same size as a standard pallet. Most people refer to these large containers as Gaylord boxes, which is a general term given to the boxes because "Gaylord" was part of the name of the original manufacturer. However, these boxes can also be referenced as pallet bins or bulk bins as well. The pallet box is a large corrugated cardboard container that is durably built with strong sidewalls and reinforcements. 

Do pallet boxes have lids?

Pallet boxes can come with lids, but they usually fold closed with flaps on the top just like a standard cardboard box. Some of these large bins are also designed in a way that allows them to be covered with a sheet of plastic pallet wrap as well. For shipping purposes, most business owners do prefer a lid that simply slides on and off of the bin because it can provide a more secure enclosure. 

What are some of the uses of these giant boxes?

The giant gaylord box can serve a lot of purposes in the average business setting. In warehouses, these bulk bins may be used to house cardboard waste, damaged materials, or even recyclable plastic materials and broken merchandise. A lot of companies use the bins for shipping purposes because they allow small items to be packaged in bulk for transport without a lot of prior preparation. For example, a company that manufactures bulk plastic fasteners may put the fasteners in these boxes for shipping and send them on to the buyers who will further use the bins of fasteners to feed their own production efforts. 

Are gaylord boxes reusable?

Gaylords are quite durably built, so it is not uncommon for them to get used repeatedly from one user to the next. For example, if you order something and it gets shipped in a gaylord, you may find a purpose for that container in your place of business. However, there are also companies that accept these boxes for reuse or recycling as well.
